Students to intern at NASA

Three local students have earned prestigious NASA internships this summer at NASA centers around the country.

Danielle Ator of Coeur d'Alene and Sarah Park of Rathdrum will be interning at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. John Lacy of Post Falls will intern at the NASA Ames Research Center near Mountain View, Calif. All three attend the University of Idaho.

Ator is a senior mechanical engineering major. This will be her third year of interning at JPL. She is the daughter of Nancy and Ken Ator. Park, the daughter of Doug and Linda Jo Park, is a junior computer science major and Lacy is a graduate student studying mechanical engineering. He interned for JPL last summer.

Interns will work with satellites and telescopes, develop nighttime driving capabilities for rovers, and design specialized engineering equipment for NASA. They will also have the unique opportunity to work with some of the world's leading researchers and scientists.

STUDENT NEWS

• Timberlake High School April students of the month include:

9th Grade-Kelsey Shacklett, daughter of Robert and Jill Shacklett of Spirit Lake, is a member of student council and the cheerleading squad. She enjoys dancing and listening to music, taking care of her goats, swimming and riding her 4-wheeler.

10th Grade-David Barker is a member of Junior Statesman of America. He is interested in philosophy and enjoys hiking and 4-wheeling. He is the son of Lyle Barker of Athol.

11th Grade-Christopher Dallenbach, son of Barry and Suzie Dallenbach of Twin Lakes, is a member of the district champion boys track team, the cross country team, Quiz Team and Drama. He qualified for state in cross country, track and drama.

12th Grade-Melissa Malcolm enjoys riding mules, her new puppy, Tucker, and spending time with family. She is the daughter of Zara Malcolm of Athol.

• Pre-nursing student Molly McCarthy of Post Falls was recently selected as the recipient of the Burns Award at North Idaho College. The award, which is given annually to an outstanding student in the NIC biology department, is named in honor of W. James Burns Jr., who taught in NIC's biology department for 21 years. He also served as a member of the Panhandle Health District board.

Molly is a graduate of Coeur d'Alene High School and plans to enter the nursing program at NIC this fall, working toward a degree in registered nursing. She hopes to become a travel nurse for several years, balancing her education with field experience before returning to school to pursue a doctoral degree.

McCarthy has worked as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines, taught snowboarding classes and considers herself a travel fanatic.

• Lisa Eberle of Post Falls recently graduated from the University of Portland with a bachelor's degree in computer science.

• Abigail S. Blank of Hayden received recognition for academic excellence during Honors Day ceremonies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where she is completing her sophomore year.

• Area fall quarter 2005 graduates at Eastern Washington University:

Coeur d'Alene-Amber Ochoa, Bachelor of Science, nursing; Lynn Painter, Bachelor of Arts; Shane Clark, Bachelor of Arts, business administration; Nicolle Clutter, Bachelor of Arts, education.

Dalton Gardens-Kurt Sigler, Master of Business Administration.

Post Falls-David Stockdale, Bachelor of Science.

Rathdrum-Erica Sphuler, Master of Business Administration.

• Lakeland School District juniors receiving Top Scholar honors from University of Idaho Alumni Association and U.S. Bank include:

COMMUNITY NEWS

• Eight juniors from Lakeland School District have been chosen to attend American Legion Idaho Gem Boys State. They were selected by American Legion Post 149, Athol.

Attending the event at Gowen Field in Boise June 4-11 are Jeff Crump and Mitchell Douglas from Timberlake High School and Drew Hooper, Tyler Bethke, Casey Schelin, Kevin Ramus, Michael Peterson and Marcus Williams from Lakeland High School.

• Jonathan S. Bowler has enlisted in the United States Army's Future Soldier Program and will leave for basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., on June 24. He is a 2006 graduate of Post Falls High School and the son of Paul and Theresa Bowler.
