Daley names state senator city clerk
(Crain’s) — Miguel del Valle, Illinois Senate assistant majority leader, has been appointed city clerk of Chicago, filling the vacancy created when James Laski was accused of taking bribes to divert business to friends.
Mayor Richard M. Daley announced Mr. del Valle’s appointment Thursday to fill Mr. Laski’s unexpired term. Mr. Laski resigned in February after federal authorities charged him with taking $48,000 in bribes for Chicago’s Hired Truck Program. Mr. Laski pleaded guilty in March and was later sentenced to two years in prison.
The appointment needs City Council approval. If approved, Mr. del Valle, D-Chicago, would begin his term in November.
In a release, Mr. Daley cited Mr. del Valle’s dedication to increasing affordable housing, combating mortgage fraud, improving bilingual education, improving health care and creating jobs.
“Senator del Valle stands out from the crowd because of his qualifications, his experience and his integrity,” Mr. Daley said in a statement. “Perhaps most important, he’s a man of unquestioned integrity who will run the clerk’s office as he runs his Senate office — honestly, efficiently and effectively.”
