Former federal prosecutor joins Baker & McKenzie

By: Brandon Glenn Nov. 06, 2006

(Crain’s) — A prominent former federal fraud prosecutor has joined Chicago-based law firm Baker & McKenzie LLP as a partner.

The addition of Robert W. Kent Jr., 48, will boost Baker & McKenzie’s white-collar criminal defense, complex civil litigation and internal investigations practices, according to a statement from the law firm.

Mr. Kent is based in Baker & McKenzie’s Chicago office. He started work with the firm last month, a spokeswoman for the law firm said.

“As clients increasingly try to ensure global compliance with a broad array of laws and ethical expectations, (Mr. Kent's) perspective will be a great addition to our existing resources," said Tom Doyle, chair of Baker & McKenzie's North American litigation practice.

While with the Justice Department, Mr. Kent led a number of high-profile fraud prosecutions, including the government’s case against Conrad Black, the former CEO of Chicago Sun-Times parent Hollinger International Inc. Mr. Black has pleaded not guilty.

Mr. Kent also led the case against Laurence Capriotti and Jack Hargrove, two Orland Park insurance executives convicted in 2005 of looting about $90 million from their companies.

Mr. Kent received his law degree from Stanford University in 1983.

Baker & McKenzie is among the largest U.S. law firms by annual revenue, exceeding $1.5 billion for the first time in its past fiscal year. About 225 of the firm's 3,400 lawyers are based in Chicago.
